Reviews
What I like about the film is modern and traditional depiction in the film. This is represented by the Din family. The family can be known as modern Malay during that era. They are rich, educated and open-minded. But they are also traditional when it comes to religion. Faud Din, the main character of the film, is like a “ghost” from the past questioning his family members asking what happened to their roots – 'adat' – culture and whether they have forgotten all about it? Reasons because of the way Faizal and Farid behaves and Nazreen's dress code in the scene where she was sitting by the pool with Farid. Hybridity, the comparison between modern and traditional values. The values can be found in Faud's character. He is modern physically but he is traditional mentally. In the Malay culture, the first son bears extreme responsibility and importance. Females do not have a say. Faud is the eldest son of Datuk H.M. Din and Miwah. He returned to his homeland after years staying abroad because of his love for the country and his family. He is unwell and he knows that he will not live long, so he makes sure he settles all the necessary matters that he need to handle before he moves on to the next life.
What I do not like about the film is the draggy storyline. The film's slow pace makes me, as a audience feel restless and bored of the film.
Some editing techniques in the film makes the storyline to not progress smoothly. Like the scene of Faud, Mona and Faizal's confrontation. The scene repeats a few times till I was lost and confused for a moment.
In the aspects of mise-en-scene, there are four general areas and its uses which are settings; costumes and make-up; lighting plus staging. The settings of the film is mainly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But the film also includes other places like Penang, Malaysia.
Costumes have a casual role in the narrative of the film. For example, the Din family members dress modernly. This is to show that the family are modern, rich, educated and open-minded. In the film, most character's do not put on much make-up except for some female characters like Dila, Mona and Nazreen because make-up brings out the character's personality traits.
The quality of the film's lighting is mainly soft light throughout the film.
Staging refers to the movement and acting of the performer. The actor's performance consists of visual elements like the appearance, facial expressions and gestures of the performer; and sounds like effects and the performer's voice. Visual elements were portrayed by the actors and actresses involved the film. The performer's voice also change according to the mood of the characters. Natural surrounding sound effects were also used in the film.
